Week 10: International Response to Nuclear Trade and Security

This week, we cover international nuclear "control" issues. As background not included in the syllabus, I encourage you take a few minutes (literally, just a few) to (re-)acquaint yourselves with the underlying science of nuclear physics. See here for a thrilling video on binding energies and spellating neutrons.

Since the 1st nuke, managing the atom has been a fundamental component of international policy making. On the national side, managing the atom consists of both security and commercial considerations. Take, for example, this recent report published by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).

The NEI study compares US nuclear export policy with other select cases from major nuclear exporting countries, concluding that the US system is too onerous, opaque, and, ultimately, deleterious to US nuclear industry competitiveness (blah, blah, blah).
